Grassroots Development and Empowerment Action Platform
Public Accountability

Grassroots Development and Empowerment Action Platform (GDEAP) is committed to changing Cameroonian society. It hopes that through its community accountability program it can improve as well as transform the society in Cameroon. GDEAP plans to achieve its goals by innovating, researching as well as practicing programs that are based on several factors that are required in order to foster improvement in human self-worth.

We have adopted what we believe is a comprehensive approach through use of various programs in public accountability. The Grassroots Development and Empowerment Action Platform community accountability program advocates greater transparency as well as planned management in community development projects. Grassroots Development and Empowerment Action Platform understands that actions committed by local officials will directly as well as significantly impact the lives of everyone at the grassroots and Cameroonian in general in different ways.

Grassroots Development and Empowerment Action Platform is of the belief that it is only possible to increase fairness in society if grassroots officials are made accountable for their deeds and actions. Grassroots Development and Empowerment Action Platform also holds that public officials must be made to provide explanations about their actions and they need to be held accountable for those actions. Their actions will be judged according to certain standards.

We believe in the following public accountability core values:
  • Collaboration

  • Continuous learning

  • Diversity as well as inclusion

  • Focusing on assets

  • Integrity

We are also following a line of action in which we can coordinate advocacy efforts for effective accountability in public life. We, along with a number of grassroots organizations, represent a cross-section of the non-profit/non-governmental community. We are currently developing a model of contractual agreement between providers of advocacy and various organizations for providing advocacy services. We also want to identify those advocacy networks that are already doing good work for sharing best practices and to find ways of improving our advocacy efforts.

We have initiated The Community Accountability Campaign Project and we are going to be making full use of social media. Use of social media helps disseminate information, and most youths are fans to social media. Through information sharing on social media, we can with verifiable facts keep public officials in check. If a public official mismanages public money then they will be held accountable.

Furthermore, Grassroots Development and Empowerment Action Platform also advocates for review of unacceptable human rights violations perpetrated against poor grassroots youths and women or any members of the community by traditional rulers and their ruling team. GDEAP would work with partners to take necessary action to hold such public figures accountable. We shall work with both traditional authorities and locals to improve knowledge on the importance of transparency and respect of human rights while respecting the constituted customs and traditions of thecommunities.

GDEAP also is developing an Educational Program on Public Accountability as part of its Vision 2025 which it hopes to partner with schools to give young minds fundamental training on character building, transparency and accountability in public management as well as integrity which GDEAP believes will set the foundation for future leadership not only for the community but the country as a whole.
